Re:Engage
3-17 August 2008
Two-weeks to enable young people to engage with culture via a professional calling in a specific sphere of society.
WHERE: Highfield Oval, Harpenden, UK
WHO: 18-35 (students and young professionals)
Just north of London there is a place, a place where young men and women come to be inspired -- to be refreshed and renewed in body, mind and spirit. This place is called The Oval, the event, Re:Engage.
This annual gathering of students and young professionals will spend two weeks in fellowship and being inspired by others who have made it their business to bring Jesus to the workplace.
A sample of previous speakers include Reverend Canon Andrew White, a pioneer and peace maker in the Middle East; Hollywood film director, David Cunningham; Baroness Caroline Cox, House of Lords representative and an advocate against injustice; and Kim Tan, a research scientist and venture capitalist.
"All of the teachers challenged the Re:Engage participants to translate the timeless story of God into the culture of our times in areas such as business, the arts, government, media, and education," said Bronwyn Sheppard, a participant in the 2005 event. "This is very much part of our lives to understand the importance of this calling of ours, whether it is to a remote tribe in Afghanistan or to the concrete jungle of Hollywood, to always be engaging culture in a way that looks like Jesus and that brings forth His character in society."
The name Re:Engage was chosen because of the emphasis on "engaging" all relevant spheres of society with the power of the good news, and also to draw people who are already working in these areas, to re-engage with the YWAM "DNA" that influenced them to want to love and disciple the nations. Last year many participants made concrete plans and presented project ideas that would give flesh to some of the passion and vision in their hearts.
"As many of us are now moving into the workplace and wanting to accurately present the message of Christ to this generation, we need inspiration, we need perspective, and we need prayer," said participant and organiser, Peter Wilburg, as he looked to the year ahead. "At Re:Engage this coming summer, all of this will happen. An exciting and real time of testimony, of concerted intercession, and of inspirational speaking can be expected by all those attend. You are a part of this movement."
Cost: Costs: £250 or less for the full two weeks. (Dollar and Euro amounts may vary due to exchange rates.) There is a £25 discount for anyone who applies and is accepted by May 2008.)
